The Artist

Meet The Artist

Dominican born, Artexpo SOLO award-winning artist Sócrates Márquez brings his works to life by exploring with acrylics, oils, households items and found objects. The backbone of his work is movement and energy. Representing the irrefutable connection of the individual with the universe as a macrocosm and with himself, as a microcosm. His use of bold markings of string mops or other objects, combined with imagery and his signature paint splatter technique allow him to produce artworks that are vibrant and thought-provoking, positioning viewers in a window of the universe. Inviting them to embark on an experience of discovery and self-interpretation within the "Cohesive and Intentional Chaos" that he produces.

In 2013, Sócrates was accepted as a participant in Artexpo New York, one of the largest art fairs in the world, where despite his little experience and formal education in fine arts, he was awarded as SOLO AWARD winner, being recognized as part of the most outstanding artists during the exhibition.

In 2014, Sócrates was named by Art Business News, the art industry news leader since 1977, as one of the Top Emerging Artists of the year. This was revealed after his successful exhibit "Splatters" held at Artexpo New York, the world's largest fine art trade show, on April 4-6, 2014 at Pier 94, New York.

His charisma and energy draw crowds to his booth to meet him, to see his artwork and to learn about his creative process. "The combination of [his] work, [his] booth design and [his] presence...is MAGIC" - says Rick Barnett, Artexpo Business Development Director.

Most recently, he relocated to Amsterdam in The Netherlands, after spending over 22 years in New York City.

Márquez is primarily self-taught and in 2007 he enrolled in art classes hosted by the English painter John A. Parks at the School of Visual Arts of New York.
